I lost my parents and experienced the process of taking care of everything, including their home. It was surprising how much stuff they had collected over the years and I decided then and there that I would not let my children go through that.

We were in a six bedroom, three level house in Kennesaw and wanted to downsize. The constant maintenance had been wearing on us for a long time and we were sick of working every weekend. We both won’t retire for another year, and I wasn’t ready for a “retirement community.” When we learned about Windsong’s Active Adult, low maintenance lifestyle, we were intrigued.

I wanted to craft a maintenance free courtyard that fit into the natural surroundings like it’s been here forever. We spend a lot of time out here relaxing and hanging out with friends around the fire pit; this sanctuary connects me to nature in a powerful way.

I was concerned that everyone might be really OLD. I remember how surprised I was to see life bustling when I visited the neighborhood – people out walking and chatting and everyone seemed younger than I expected.

I love it here at Windsong at Seven Hills and I can’t image anything better or more suited to us. I can’t say enough amazing things about how great it feels to live with no yard maintenance. Now all we have to do on the weekends and evenings is go somewhere and have fun.

I have always been a nature person and here I have my own private courtyard retreat. I can also fall asleep on cool nights to the sounds from the creek below. The best little secret about living at Windsong at Seven Hills is how breezy it is up here on the top of this hill.

Windsong did an amazing job of placing these homes on the property – our porches are close enough to have a conversation and yet the homes and courtyards are really private. We have everything here: neighbors, privacy, no yard maintenance, and a constant breeze.

Working with Windsong has indeed been a breeze. This has been the most pleasant experience we’ve ever had. Our home, with the finished basement for our kids when they visit from Seattle, has been marvelous for us. We are freed up to be social and have fun. Doreen drove by Heron Pond when it was just a pile of dirt and was instantly intrigued with the “Active Adult” community going in at a perfect location for us. We have some friends that live in those larger, socially structured communities, but that didn’t feel like us. We enjoy exploring what God has created and getting out into nature. Heron Pond felt different because it seemed to truly be for “active” adults. We enjoy that we can lock up and leave for an adventure at the drop of a hat; that is a big priority for us. Having the lawn maintenance taken care of is a huge piece of this freedom.

We wanted to be in this area as Doreen’s granddaughters attend Kennesaw State University and we love heading north to go hiking. We routinely go on hiking adventures and have walked all over Georgia. Recently we did a 4-day/60-mile hiking and camping adventure in the Grand Canyon. Doreen still reminisces of a 65 mile “Walking History” vacation with her brother in England, where she is from. And I’m headed to Park City, Utah in a couple weeks for my family’s annual reunion ski trip. This home and community really supports our active lifestyle well.

I initially liked the Buckley plan, but needed more private space for my office – upstairs preferably. I run an investment management company and need to be able to close out the world, focus and even work at 3 AM when the European market opens. There wasn’t a plan at Heron Pond that fit our needs exactly but we really wanted to be here.

We ran into Steve Romeyn at a local restaurant and I told him of my dilemma. After a personal discussion, he told me about a plan that wasn’t fully developed but in the works that might be more of what I was looking for. I was impressed that Steve would choose to finalize this plan and even bring me into this project in order to refine the design based on our input and how we planned to live in the house. I have built 6 homes previously and while I am not an expert, I had some experience with this sort of project.

Since we were the first to build this new plan, we ran into little things here and there that needed all of us to collaborate. I really enjoyed how responsive and proactive the Windsong team was and we worked together to craft a home that really suits our needs. On several occasions, I would ask the build team for their input: What would you do if it were your home? They always offered thoughtful suggestions that we immediately adopted. I really appreciated that they were attentive during the build and would see something questionable and pull me in to discuss – then it could be modified before it became too difficult or costly to change. The whole build team was just a delight – collaborative and so easy to work with.

Even though Windsong is not a custom builder, this experience has given us a home that suits our lifestyle perfectly – and has created a new plan that others can enjoy. With the homesite we chose, there was enough room in the courtyard to enclose part of that into a sunroom and still have a nice relaxing outdoor area we look forward to enjoying when it warms up. This lot also afforded more length to the plan and we took advantage of an additional four and a half feet that really makes the owner’s suite feel huge.

We are delighted to be settling into our new Windsong home and have already made many wonderful new friends. So many neighbors are like us and travel a lot and we have many adventures to discuss when we regroup. I look forward to many more with Doreen, especially now with this easier lifestyle. Windsong Properties and Partner Herbert Construction Company Win Project of Year Award

Windsong Properties has the privilege of partnering with a variety of distinguished vendors throughout the year to accomplish many of its projects. This collaboration produces quality built and sought after active adult communities, such as Windsong at Seven Hills in the breezy mountain setting of Dallas, Georgia.

Recently, one of Windsong Properties’ partners, Herbert Construction Company, was honored with the Project of the Year Award for single-family residences by the Concrete Foundations Association of North America (CFA), an organization made up of concrete foundation contractors throughout the United States, at a conference in Sandusky, Ohio for its work at the active adult community. The company, who has partnered with Windsong Properties since 2011, received the award for its foundation/basement walls installed at Windsong at Seven Hills. This project was even featured on a worldwide magazine cover, Concrete International.

“I am really proud of the way our company performed the work on this technical project with challenging site conditions,” explained Doug Herbert, president of Herbert Construction Company. “Even though the project was complicated enough to win a national award, our employees handled it with the speed and accuracy of our typical basement foundations. They’ve become very good at making the difficult job look easy.”

Windsong Properties Participates in Run at Work Day

RunAtWork_91414_LowResToday, September 19, the Windsong Properties team laced up their sneakers and pinned on race numbers to gear up for Run at Work Day. Promoted by the Road Runners Club of America, this nationwide effort was established to encourage daily exercise.

Once Becky Knight, purchasing assistant at Windsong Properties and avid runner, heard about the event, she knew she had to get her colleagues involved. “I have been running for about two years,” explained Becky. “It has been instrumental in helping me lose over 150 pounds. So anytime I can promote being healthy and active, I do.”

11 team members joined Becky, and they ran/walked from Windsong Properties’ corporate office in Woodstock to the nearby active adult community, Heron Pond, and back. Approximately 0.9 miles each way for a total of 1.8 miles, the team encouraged each other along the way and had fun too.

While at Heron Pond, the participants were able to see (if only for a quick second or two) one of their latest projects.
