The company, who has partnered with Windsong Properties since 2011, received the award for its foundation/basement walls installed at Windsong at Seven Hills. This project was even featured on a worldwide magazine cover, Concrete International.
“I am really proud of the way our company performed the work on this technical project with challenging site conditions,” explained Doug Herbert, president of Herbert Construction Company. “Even though the project was complicated enough to win a national award, our employees handled it with the speed and accuracy of our typical basement foundations. They’ve become very good at making the difficult job look easy.”

Today, September 19, the Windsong Properties team laced up their sneakers and pinned on race numbers to gear up for Run at Work Day. Promoted by the Road Runners Club of America, this nationwide effort was established to encourage daily exercise.
Once Becky Knight, purchasing assistant at Windsong Properties and avid runner, heard about the event, she knew she had to get her colleagues involved. “I have been running for about two years,” explained Becky. “It has been instrumental in helping me lose over 150 pounds. So anytime I can promote being healthy and active, I do.”
11 team members joined Becky, and they ran/walked from Windsong Properties’ corporate office in Woodstock to the nearby active adult community, Heron Pond, and back. Approximately 0.9 miles each way for a total of 1.8 miles, the team encouraged each other along the way and had fun too.
While at Heron Pond, the participants were able to see (if only for a quick second or two) one of their latest projects. We lived just 22 miles from Heron Pond in Kennesaw/West Cobb area in a 5,600 square foot, three level house. About two years ago our oldest daughter, who lives in Woodstock, talked to us about moving closer. We started looking around but everything was too far away. Then she told us about Windsong building on 92 at Heron Pond last year.
I remember when she told us that there was a “50+ community” going in on 92… I heard “50+ community” and felt sad. I am NOT old and certainly NOT ready for a “retirement home!” But we really wanted to be closer to her and our two granddaughters – and low maintenance, single level living sounded really good. We also didn’t want to live in a typical neighborhood anymore – the lots and homes are bigger, the traffic is heavier and there is just more to maintain.
We met Steve Romeyn initially, then Andrew the builder and then Kris at Bel-Aire. We were impressed with everyone; we also had a positive referral for Mark Carruth from our former builder, so we knew we were in good hands with Windsong.
Our home was really customized and very elegant; we loved it! We wanted to downsize, but we were not willing to sacrifice quality and personal touches. The Windsong team was great, responsive and accommodating. We incorporated the courtyard patio into the main living area and that gave us enough space to keep a game room that fits our pool table perfectly. We still have enough room in our courtyard to have a nice outdoor living area and we’ll have a fire pit, pavers and a water feature complete in about a week. We love how open and livable the Carson is especially since we brought the house into the courtyard.
We had to part with a lot of stuff when we went from 5,600 to 3,100 square feet, but it really felt good to let go of stuff we had been holding onto. My biggest concern was how to get our life into a smaller home, but it hasn’t been as awkward as I feared. We love this place and how spacious this plan is.
Larry is a great cook and we enjoy entertaining. It’s easy with our beautiful kitchen across from the billiards room; the courtyard and dry bar are steps away and you can be in the kitchen and socialize with everyone in the main living area.
From April to November we spend about two weeks a month in our RV resort in Virginia; we really like that you can comfortably lock up and leave here without worrying. We set the alarm and go – with yard maintenance taken care of and a no-maintenance courtyard, we are free to travel and have an adventure. Here, we are an hour closer to our Virginia place and three quarters of a mile from our daughter – so mission accomplished.
Selecting Windsong was the right choice for us. Throughout the process of building this home, there will always be issues and imperfections – because humans build homes. The question is, Will the builder step up and address issues in a timely manner and complete the job? We have been impressed with everyone on the Windsong team and they have been great about addressing our concerns every step of the way. Being the first homeowners at a community can be a scary thing with thoughts of, Will the builder finish what they started? and all the construction that still needs to happen around the house. But pioneers, Sandy and Bruce Potre were fearless when they learned about Windsong Properties. Below is their story, directly from them.
“We started our search about a year and a half ago but didn’t want to go way out to Canton or Gainesville. Powder Springs and Dallas was too far also, but when we saw the Windsong homes out there, we were impressed and very interested. We lived for 29 years in a large multi-level home with miles of stairs. After cleaning up piles of leaves and pulling weeds for all those years, we were done!
Our friend Bill told us about Windsong’s new community starting up on Highway 92 and we were immediately excited to build here; the location was a great fit for us. We liked the Carson plan best and could envision ourselves living in this open, single level home. As it were, Bill just closed on his home right behind us!
We met Kris, the sales agent, when we visited Bel-Aire; we loved the homes and her kind helpfulness. We were delighted to find that she was the sales agent here at Heron Pond. We signed up for the community email updates, attended the first VIP Preview in February and entered the lottery. By early march we were under contract and excited about our future in The Carson. At that time, there wasn’t a model to view, but after seeing the other Windsong communities, we were confident with the quality, the team and our decision.
We lived in East Cobb and really were not interested in changing our habits, but definitely wanted to downsize and enjoy a low maintenance lifestyle. Our biggest priority was to stay close to our grandchildren; we have 4 that visit us often and this plan has a private suite for them, with a separate powder room for guests – I really liked that!
Windsong worked with us to change our courtyard patio into an airy sunroom, expanding our indoor living area. We plan to add pavers, cozy fire pit seating and some plantings to our private courtyard this Fall.
Bruce’s favorite feature is the hot water recirculator that provides warm water out of the faucet immediately and hot water much faster. Actually it’s a draw; he loves the wonderfully large dual owner’s suite closets!
My favorite feature is the people! Windsong’s team was delightful; we have been impressed with all of them throughout this process and they really feel like part of the community. Also we have several friends that we have run into here already, a couple of friends from our bridge group, a couple of our tennis and golfing friends and Bill, of course. It’s nice to see some familiar faces and we have already told our friends about Heron Pond, trying to get them to move here with us.
We are so grateful to everyone at Windsong that worked hard to make this home and this community a reality. We can’t wait for the clubhouse to be built, but until then, this house will handle our 12 member bridge team just fine. We are also enjoying exploring the Woodstock area and its shopping and restaurants. This experience has been delightful and we love this home. Life really is a breeze at Heron Pond!”
Windsong Properties is honored to announce the 10th anniversary of veteran employee, Carrie Roeger. Serving as the operations manager for the active adult home builder, she is responsible for managing process improvement and coordinating work flow from sales through construction to warranty.
“Carrie is an outstanding employee and friend that goes above and beyond each day,” said Steve Romeyn, co-founder of Windsong Properties. “She has a deep understanding of our mission and the active adult market. Carrie is committed to our team and customers, and it has been a pleasure to work beside her as we expand the company.”
After spending five years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, Roeger earned a bachelor’s degree in finance at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She then worked as a production assistant for a government contractor that built base housing and was a builder assistant for the interiors division of Choate Construction before joining Windsong Properties.
“Windsong Properties was in its infancy when I was hired, and it has been a great experience to ride the triumphs and challenges of a start-up company,” explained Roeger. “Through the vision and leadership of Steve Romeyn and Mark Carruth, we survived the recession and have come out of it a stronger, better company.”
Roeger began as the company’s purchasing manager and helped with purchasing, vendor relations, contracts, estimating, quality control and accounting. After five years, she became Windsong Properties’ marketing manager and was promoted to operations manager last year.
“Windsong Properties has always been a great place to work,” continued Roeger. “As we continue to grow, I look forward to all of the new experiences that will come our way.”
