Just in time for graduations, weddings, and summer holidays, and with vaccines available, the CDC announced that it appears safe to relax restrictions for visiting people outside one’s immediate home, for the first time in 14 months. That sound you probably heard is the collective exhale of relief… along with a quickening heartbeat: we can see (and hug!) our children and grandchildren; we can visit friends again!
In 2003, when Mark Carruth and longtime friend Steve Romeyn co-founded Windsong Properties, the concept of communities of active adult homeowners was still in its inception. Although the first 55+ communities in the U.S. began in Arizona in the 1960s, Windsong’s founders saw that in the Atlanta region there was a significant unmet need for quality homes for the growing population segment.
That’s right: another noun has been amended for the use of generations who made cell phones and ear buds part of our daily attire, and is being worked into the vernacular of their parents and grandparents. So, it’s only fair that those who have been practicing “adulting” for decades offer pearls of wisdom to those who are about to enter the arena:
A carefree lifestyle means so much more than travel, golf, and discovering what it means to be a “foodie.” A sense of community naturally blooms among those who share similar life-stage experiences, a neighborhood, and the time it takes to practice the art of conversation.
Pubs and saloons, which have a long history in Georgia, were the places where neighbors once gathered, where relationships were forged over a pint of ale or a glass of whisky, beverages likely created at a nearby distillery.
With Earth Day being today (April 22) – communities are hosting special events and circulating awareness campaigns about special events and ongoing recycling programs, where residents can recycle everyday items (aluminum cans, bottles, paper, and “numbered” plastics), as well as hard-to-recycle items, such as electronics, packing materials, food containers, and more, to help keep these things out of landfills.
With high pollen counts (and drifts of yellow powder on every surface), it seems likely that we’ve seen the last of winter weather for this half of 2021: SPRING has officially arrived in Georgia!
The change of season heralds the “to-do” list that is literally named for it: Spring Cleaning. But Windsong homeowners can smile and look forward to their shorter task list, which means plenty of time for enjoying hobbies and getting together with friends and family for outdoor gatherings.
April and May are when local, seasonal farmer’s markets open in Georgia venues convenient to Windsong communities, providing the perfect excuse to wander, enjoy the weather, socialize, and maybe bring home fresh ingredients for your next meal.
Farmer’s Markets are a staple in many communities these days, offering benefits that stretch beyond the heirloom tomatoes or free-range eggs. Local markets generally offer better nutritional value, taste, and freshness than their fruit-and-vegetable counterparts in the grocery store, as well as providing environmental, economic, and social benefits.
It’s springtime, which means the birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, the weather’s getting warmer… and it’s time to file your taxes.
Yep. In a year when everything stood still, the old tax system marches on. But there are some significant changes for filers in general, and for those over age 65 in particular. According to AARP, these are the ones that will affect you most:
In a calendar full of days with different designations, Saturday, March 20, 2021, might be a bit of an over-achiever.
It’s the First Day of Spring (yay!), and a host of other fun observances such as Sports Car Racing Day, World Sparrow Day (don’t park your sports car under a tree!), and International Happiness Day.
Even if we can’t accurately predict when Spring’s weather will arrive, a handful of events give us hope that it’s at least “on its way”.
The great thing about Georgia is that we have a plethora of outdoor activities to choose from, and outdoor attractions that lure us to visit, explore, and learn about nature and history. Those near Windsong communities include:
