It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

The first of the “big holidays” is behind us, and with Thanksgiving in the rear-view mirror, it sometimes feels like we’re in “shopping mode” for the four weeks or so that follow.
But the holiday season doesn’t mean you have to spend money. Instead, consider spending time… with people you love, doing things you enjoy, or pursuing interests that you’ve either given up on or have always wanted to try.
Expert suggestions for holiday-season activities include:
- Invest in a puzzle (there are some GREAT ones out there, as puzzles have experienced quite the resurgence in popularity over the past several years) and either challenge yourself, or invite guests to join you in “puzzling” when they visit.
- Have a stay-home day and watch some of the cheesy holiday movies.
- If you feel like “being productive,” clean out a closet. Go through all of the items that have been pushed to the back, or those that have not left their hangers in the past 12 months, and donate to a shelter or community thrift store.
- Read a book or two. Doing so stimulates your mind while also helping you to unwind as you unplug.
- Invest in new pajamas for the season, and make a habit of lounging instead of packing the day full of activities.
- Collect the addresses from the holiday cards you receive, and put them on your calendar. Then, throughout the year, write to one of your friends, family members, or acquaintances each week, rekindling the art of letter-writing.
- If you enjoy leaf-peeping in the fall, segue into the winter season by going light-peeping. You don’t even have to drive very far, as light displays are abundant in the suburbs.
- Visit a museum. Hint: the High Museum of Art offers free admission to all visitors from 1-4 pm on the second Sunday of each month (that’s this weekend!) - Second Sundays.
- Go for a walk. Sure, the weather is getting chilly, but moving your body and taking in fresh air is a healthy way to combat stress that accompanies this busy season. (Plus, you can come home and get warm in front of the fireplace. Aahhh… so relaxing!)
